The article was written by scientists from the Faculty of Medicine of Vilnius University (Dr Alina Urnikytė, Acad. Prof Vaidutis Kučinskas and Assoc. Prof Alma Molytė) together with colleagues from Spain and Estonia and entitled “Evaluation of the genetic structure and evolutionary forces of the Lithuania population according to high-density SNP genotyping data”. Almost 100 representatives from ten research centres and universities from nine Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries met for the fourth time at the Alliance4Life meeting in early June. These partners form a unique community of institutions in the life sciences and medical fields that is unparalleled in the region. The focus of the meeting was to share best practices and receive training from internal and external experts as well as discuss the future of the alliance. Beginning in September of last year, I joined the faculty of the Department of Business Technologies and Entrepreneurship at Vilnius Gediminas Technical University to fulfill a full year Core Fulbright Scholarship award. This was my third Fulbright after traveling to Sri Lanka in 1992/1993, and Albania in 2003. While here at VGTU, I taught courses in Total Quality Management, Production Management, and International Trade. The experience was enlightening, fulfilling, and productive on many levels both professionally and personally. The European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) will establish two incubators in the Lithuanian cities of Vilnius in Kaunas, the only ones in Central and Eastern Europe, under an agreement by Lithuanian Minister of Economy and Innovation Virginijus Sinkevicius and CERN representatives on Thursday. Great news for prospective Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) students – a significant amount of funds will be invested into further development of study quality at KTU. European Social Fund has allocated an impressive amount of 0.5 million euros for the study programmes optimisation and developing teaching competences of teachers in physical and technological sciences. Representatives of Dezhou University (China) visited Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (VGTU). A partnership agreement has been signed during the visit. The parties have agreed to strengthen the interinstitutional relationship, to organise student exchange. In addition, a possibility to design double degree programmes has been discussed during the meeting. The European Consortium of Innovative Universities (ECIU), of which Kaunas University of Technology is a member, has been greenlighted by the EU to innovate higher education in Europe. |
