Chimamkpa Udochukwu Ibe, a young Nigerian currently living in Germany, feels proud to have been a graduate of the Faculty of Medicine of Vilnius University in 2018. He enjoyed his studies at the one of the oldest, highly regarded and respected Universities in Europe: “I am sure, that my beloved study place is among the top universities in the world. And this year Vilnius University is celebrating its 440th anniversary. What a great University! I came here, to Vilnius again in order to say: Congratulations my dear ALMA MATER!”. Tandem perovskite-CIGS solar cells, produced as a result of the collaboration between Lithuanian and German researchers, have reached an efficiency of 23.26 per cent, which currently is a world record value in this type of cells. One reason for the success lies in the cell’s intermediate layer of organic molecules: they self-assemble to cover even rough semiconductor surfaces. The self-assembling materials were synthesised at Kaunas University of Technology (KTU), Lithuania. Can't decide if you should go on Erasmus? That’s pretty normal. The most difficult part is the decision! In Lithuania, where the number of working-age people is constantly decreasing due to demographic factors, many companies face a shortage of qualified employees. According to Vilmantė Kumpikaitė-Valiūnienė, professor at Kaunas University of Technology (KTU), the companies should not shy from employing foreigners – research shows that this practice is usually beneficial and the perceived threats are almost always theoretical. Half-hundred doctoral students from 28 institutions in 16 countries took part in the 4th International PhD Summer School in Trakai, organised by Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) and ECIU partners. During the five-day event, distinguished academics, scientists and professionals from different fields were sharing their expertise on scientific publishing, big data, research ethics and other knowledge crucial for the successful career of every researcher. On 20-22 September, Hack4Vilnius – the second hackathon of Vilnius city – will take place at the Saulėtekis Campus. The aim of this hackathon – to find new solutions and create innovations for Vilnius to become smarter, healthier, more active and cleaner city. Participants will be able to propose their own ideas or tackle one of nearly 40 challenges named by the organizers and partners of the hackathon. Hopefully, the participants will find new and viable solutions to problems that the city faces. Students are invited to participate in a competition for one semester or one year long exchange studies at non-EU countries with Erasmus+ or VMU Mobility scholarship.
