KTU Social Responsibility Report 2015–2017 was published on United Nations Global Compact website last week. The University’s activities and achievements and their compatibility to the sustainable development goals are indicated in the report.

On 6-8 June, Master students from Vilnius Gediminas Technical University's (VGTU) Department of Mechanical and Material Engineering defended their master thesis. The highly respected thesis defence commission was chaired by the CEO of Vilpros pramonė and alumnus of the department Dr. Darius Ozarovskis.

This week on June 25th 6th summer school „VGTU-CalPoly 2018“ has started. 27 students from California State Polytechnic University (CalPoly) and 8 students from VGTU Faculty of Civil Engineering will study together to learn new interesting subjects.

On the roofs of the two Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) faculty buildings – Electrical and Electronics Engineering and Civil Engineering and Architecture – the largest in the Baltic States solar power plant is being installed. The completed project will take up 5.5 thousand square meters and will serve not only as a power station, but also as a laboratory for students.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) published a list of bacteria which reached critical levels of resistance and prevalence. The need to take action is considered at the highest political level: it is discussed on the G20 Health Ministers’ meetings, new R&D programmes are initiated and funded. Researchers from Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (VGTU) are also contributing to the priorities of WHO. The team represented by Dr. Vitalij Novickij is looking into new treatment methods.

The Seimas adopted the amendments (draft No XIIIP-1754(2)) to the Law on the Legal Status of Aliens* in order to implement the provisions of the Directive on the conditions of entry and residence of third-country nationals for the purposes of research, studies, training, voluntary service, pupil exchange schemes or educational projects and au pairing. The amendments were adopted by 89 votes in favour, with no votes against and 1 abstention.

The group of researchers of Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) has developed several innovative applications of cuttlebone, natural biologically active material possessing bone and wound healing properties. The products include natural bone implants, suppositories for treatment of haemorrhoids and wound gels. By removing protein from the cuttlebone, KTU researchers have solved the main challenge connected to the usage of marine-derived materials – risk of side effects, such as allergic reaction of potential users.

International scientific conference “CRISPR 2018”, dedicated to the revolutionary genome editing technology, started today, June 20th, in Vilnius, Lithuania. The conference is organised by Vilnius university (VU) Life Sciences Centre professor Virginijus Šikšnys, North Carolina University professor Robert Barrangou, and Philippe Horarth, a scientist working in “DuPont”.
