In the aftermath of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, MEPs demand tougher sanctions on Russia and new efforts to grant Ukraine EU candidate status. On Tuesday, President Gitanas Nausėda held a phone call with President Andrzej Duda of Poland. The Presidents of Lithuania and Poland discussed support for Ukraine and the strengthening of regional security. Parliament’s President and group leaders adopted the following statement on Russia’s military attack on Ukraine, and announced an extraordinary plenary session for next Tuesday. On 22 February, a special informal meeting of EU foreign ministers on the situation in Ukraine was held in Paris, France, as Russia decided to recognize the independence of the two areas in Ukraine’s Luhansk and Donetsk oblasts held by Russian-backed separatists, and to send troops to eastern Ukraine. |
