On Monday, President Gitanas Nausėda had a telephone conversation with President Andrzej Duda of Poland to discuss the course of the Russia’s war in Ukraine, assistance to Ukraine and regional security issues, as well as preparations for the NATO Summit in Madrid.

Laast Thursday, the European Parliament adopted three resolutions on the respect for human rights in China, Nicaragua and Georgia.

On 17 May, the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Raimundas Karoblis met with the Flemish Minister-President Jan Jambon, who is paying a working visit to Lithuania. During the meeting, the interlocutors discussed the implementation of the cooperation programme for 2019-2023 under the Cooperation Agreement between the Government of Lithuania and the Government of Flanders, the geopolitical situation in the region, support for Ukraine, the situation in Belarus and support for Belarusian civil society.

Roberta Metsola called on EU leaders to commit to long-term engagement when it comes to Ukraine, including securing energy independence for the EU.

At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, President Gitanas Nausėda held meetings with Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili and Secretary-General of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Mathias Cormann to discuss Russia’s threat to its neighbors, and expressed his support for Georgia’s European integration and for the OECD’s steps to aid Ukraine.

On 25 May in Kristiansand, Norway, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Gabrielius Landsbergis attended the 19th Ministerial Session of the Council of the Baltic Sea States (CBSS) along with other CBSS Ministers of Foreign Affairs and high-level representatives of the European Union. The meeting focused on Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine, possibilities of the CBSS member states to contribute to the provision of support for Ukraine, further strengthening regional cooperation, involving young people and civil society, and opportunities for accelerating the green and digital transformation.

The Parliament urges the Council to open negotiations on EU membership with Albania and North Macedonia, especially in the geostrategic context of war in Ukraine.
