The meeting was attended by the troops of the German 41st brigade’s battalion, who arrived in Lithuania this week, as well as the command element of the brigade, which has been permanently deployed in Lithuania since September, and their leadership.
During his visit, the President took an interest in the preparedness of the German military units for forward defense and various combat tasks. Together with Chief of Defense Lieutenant General Valdemar Rupšys, he observed the joint Lithuanian–German exercise Fast Griffin at the Gaižiūnai Training Area.
“I am pleased to see that Germany is sticking to its commitments by continuing to invest in our military infrastructure. The decisions taken at the NATO Summit in Madrid are being implemented, as demonstrated by the deployment of additional troops in Lithuania and the ongoing joint bilateral exercises,” Gitanas Nausėda pointed out.
According to the President, we need to further strengthen NATO’s eastern flank and consolidate the security architecture of the region, which requires seamless military cooperation between Lithuania and Germany. Gitanas Nausėda added that the joint Lithuanian–German exercises would help to ensure a high level of readiness and interoperability between the two countries’ armed forces in the future.
President Gitanas Nausėda stressed that we must not forget our obligations as a host country, too, and to provide the necessary infrastructure for the additional troops from Germany.
“We need to maintain adequate funding of the Lithuanian national defense system, further develop and improve military, logistics and accommodation infrastructure,” the President underlined.
