On Wednesday, at the Davos World Economic Forum, President Gitanas Nausėda and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg discussed preparations for the NATO Summit to be held in Vilnius this July. According to the Lithuanian leader, the NATO Summit in Vilnius is of particular importance in further strengthening the security of the Baltic region and the Euro-Atlantic area, given the context of Russia’s continued military aggression in Ukraine.

Speaking at the Davos World Economic Forum on Tuesday, President Gitanas Nausėda called on the European countries to increase the spending on security, to speed up the development of defense industry, and to reduce dependence on Russian energy resources. The Lithuanian leader also stressed that NATO had to remain the cornerstone of the security and defense of Europe and the Euro-Atlantic area as a whole—there was no alternative to it, and no need to artificially create one.

On 11-13 January, Lithuania's Minister of Foreign Affairs Gabrielius Landsbergis will pay a working visit to the Republic of Korea. Landsbergis will meet with Foreign Minister Park Jin, the Minister for Trade Dukgeun Ahn, the Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee Chair at the National Assembly of South Korea Kim Tae-ho, and representatives of South Korean think tanks. Landsbergis will also hold meetings with CEOs of Samsung Display, SK Group, and nSage.

President Gitanas Nausėda welcomed the third NATO-EU Declaration signed on Tuesday by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, President of the European Council Charles Michel and President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen.

The Lithuanian Armed Forces continues contributing to the multinational operations and missions in 2023. On January 3 troops with the Deployable Communication and IS Module (DCISM), Lithuanian Great Hetman Kristupas Radvila Perkūnas Signal and IS Battalion, were formally deployed for a six-month mission at the international NATO-led operation NS2T (NATO Support to Türkiye) in Adana, Türkiye.

On 21 December, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Gabrielius Landsbergis received the Ambassador of Japan to Lithuania Tetsu Ozaki and handed a letter to the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan Yoshimasa Hayashi. The letter welcomes the longstanding friendship between Lithuania and Japan and the breakthrough in bilateral relations. Lithuania and Japan celebrated a centenary of their diplomatic ties this year and announced a strategic partnership.

Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė has sent a message of greetings to Benjamin Netanyahu on assuming the office of Prime Minister of the State of Israel, along with the best wishes for success at keeping Israel strong.

On Thursday, 5 January, President Gitanas Nausėda will attend the funeral of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI to be held at St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican.

Renewable energy, the circular economy, migration and online security are all on Parliament’s agenda for 2023.

On 20 December, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Gabrielius Landsbergis met with the Secretary of State for Trade at the Spanish Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism Xiana Margarida Méndez Bértolo, and discussed possibilities for economic cooperation.
