"The European Union’s long-term political, military, financial, economic and humanitarian support to Ukraine is crucial in the face of Russia’s continued aggression. The European Union must also work with its transatlantic allies to ensure the broadest possible international support for Ukraine’s proposed peace plan and to consolidate financial support for its reconstruction,” the President said, addressing European leaders.
Gitanas Nausėda, who arrived in Brussels from Kyiv, underlined that despite the ongoing war, Ukraine is making rapid progress in implementing reforms. “I believe that by the end of this year, we will be able to open negotiations on Ukraine’s membership in the European Union," the President said.
Gitanas Nausėda emphasized that the EU must continue its policy of sanctions against the aggressor Russia and its accomplice Belarus.
“We should not assume that we have done everything we can. We need to start considering the 12th package of sanctions as soon as possible, in which we propose to include Rosatom as well as a complete ban on dual-use goods. Belarus’ involvement in the war against Ukraine – allowing to use its territory for Russian attacks, deporting Ukrainian children, deploying nuclear weapons – cannot go unanswered," the President said.
The President stressed that Russia’s legal responsibility for aggression and war crimes must be addressed together with future reparations. Lithuania supports the establishment of a special international tribunal and the use of frozen Russian funds for the reconstruction of Ukraine.
