Vilnius University (VU) has received a Sustainable Development Impact Award at the Research Excellence Awards. This special event was helt on October 18th to celebrate twenty-years of Lithuanian Research Library Consortium's (LMBA) and to recognize members’ achievements with research excellence awards in support of the future of Lithuanian research.

On October 12, Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (VILNIUS TECH) warmly welcomed a delegation from Taiwan's National Sun Yat-sen University (NSYSU), which consisted of President Prof. Ying-Yao Cheng, Senior Vice President Prof. Chih-Wen Kuo, Vice President for International Affairs Prof. Mitch Chou and others.

The neuroscientists from the Institute of Biosciences at Vilnius University Life Sciences Centre focuse on the development of brain-computer interface. In addition to using measured brain impulses for rehabilitation, the scientists use them to control assistive mechanisms for people with disabilities, and to use brain responses to amplify the emotions of audiences during concerts and performances. Dr. Inga Griškova-Bulanova, a researcher at the VU Institute of Biosciences, discussed the emotions evoked by music, her international project, and the possibilities of “mind reading.”

At a time when universities have already started their academic terms, school students in their final years are actively preparing for next year’s national exams. Dr. Vita Zalite, a researcher from Latvia on a traineeship at Vilnius University (VU) Institute of Chemistry, explains that while artificial intelligence technologies may be able to scan our teeth and calculate the precise shape of dental fillings or implants in the future, so far chemists have been looking for materials that are less harmful to humans and more environmentally friendly.

Friday afternoon, it was announced that the Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to human rights advocate Ales Bialiatski from Belarus, the Russian human rights organisation Memorial, and the Ukrainian human rights organisation Center for Civil Liberties. According to the political scientist and lecturer at the Institute of International Relations and Political Science of Vilnius University (VU TSPMI), the message this award sends to the broader world is that the fight for human rights is high significance in this region. Still, in his view, the Commission also went for a geopolitically cautious option.
