Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) is starting the process of rectorial election by announcing an international open competition for the position of the rector on 9 January. Applications for the position of the rector can be submitted until 10 March.

Starting in January 2023, Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) offers its students a new upskilling programme SKILLed AI. The programme is aimed at KTU students of all majors who want to learn more about the purpose, possibilities of use, and benefits of AI. SKILLed AI admission starts today; students in their second or third semester of undergraduate studies are eligible to apply.

Earlier this month, Kaunas University of Technology EDU_Lab hosted Study Quality Day 2022. Organised since 2015, this year’s Study Quality Day invited a discussion about innovation in the study process. More than 100 representatives of Lithuanian universities took part in the seminar, panel discussions and five experiential labs.

In 2022, as many as 4,228 students started the academic year at the Faculty of Medicine (867 are studying bachelor's programmes, 337 are in master's programmes, 2,056 are in integral programmes, 821 are in residency programmes, 151 are in doctoral programmes). Within these numbers, the faculty hosts 674 students from abroad. This figure is particularly encouraging because the faculty, which is celebrating the 10th anniversary of the launch of its international studies programmes, has never had so many students from abroad.

As we all start counting down the days to the New Year, 2023, it is time to look back and take stock of what we have had. For ATHENA, 2022 has been an exciting year! A lot has happened, so here is a brief overview of ATHENA 2022 highlights.

On Friday, the Rector of Vilnius University (VU), Prof. Rimvydas Petrauskas, was re-elected for the second term in office as the President of the Lithuanian University Rectors' Conference (LURC).

The capital city stepped into the new school year offering an innovation – cash incentives to attract talents to schools. And the idea worked out – by the end of October, 190 new teachers joined 90 educational institutions in Vilnius. Sholom Aleichem Gymnasium, Viršuliškės School, Emilija Pliaterytė Progymnasium and Naujininkai Progymnasium were among the most common choices.

In an online meeting on Friday 9 December, the Memorandum of Understanding was approved which had been signed in November by Vytautas Magnus University Rector Prof. Juozas Augutis and the Academic Director of Global Partnerships at Keele University (UK) David Law. The meeting was attended by representatives of both universities as well as the British Ambassador to Lithuania Brian Olley and Director of Cormack Consultancy Group Gintaras Steponavičius.

The voice is a medium we use to successfully interact with the outside world. Unfortunately, most people’s voices change or even disappear after a laryngectomy. To improve these patients’ quality of life, a team of researchers from the universities in Kaunas, Lithuania invented a new substitute voice evaluation index – it will detect pathologies in patients’ voices faster and better.

On Tuesday, December 13th, 2022, the Australian-Lithuanian Cyber Research Network (ALCRN) opened the Australia-Lithuania Hybrid Threat Centre.
