Linguistics maintains its position as the best-performing field in Arts and Humanities. This year, it moved up one position to the top 201–250 globally (251–300 in 2022). In Natural sciences, Physics and Astronomy ranked 351–400 in the world.
Chemical Engineering and Medicine also made it to the leading positions in the Rankings by Subject 2023, both ranking 351–400.
This year two new study fields were ranked. Materials science (401–420) and Electrical and Electronic Engineering (501–520) were evaluated for the first time. In the field of Social Sciences and Management, Economics and Econometrics stood out, ranking in the top 401–450. In Life Sciences and Medicine, Biological Sciences ranked 451–500. Chemistry, ranked for the first time last year, moved up to the 501–550 position.
This year, the broad subject area of Physical Sciences scored 73.9 out of 100 on the H index, which measures the importance of research papers.
The ranking lists a total of almost 1,594 institutions worldwide across 54 narrow subjects in 5 broad subjects: Arts and Humanities, Engineering and Technology, Life Sciences and Medicine, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences and Medicine. Universities are ranked according to the following criteria: Academic Reputation, Employer Reputation, Citations per Paper, and the H-index, which measures the productivity of researchers and the global impact of their work. Of the criteria, the most influential is Academic Reputation.
