WorldThe Northern Ireland peace process, Turkey's recent actions in Cypriot waters, the EU-Moldova association agreement and the Court of Auditors' report will all be on the agenda when MEPs meet on Wednesday and Thursday for the November part-session in Brussels. The session will start with the commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall and the election of the new EP vice-president to replace Corina Creţu who left to become commissioner. On Sunday it will already have been 25 years since the Berlin Wall collapsed. On that day thousands gathered all along the wall that had separated East and West Germany since 1961. When the East German government announced that people were now able to cross the border whenever they wanted, people flocked to the wall and tore it down. "Europe has shown to the world that it's possible to leave war behind and build peace. Now it's Colombia's turn." More than nine million Syrians have been forced to flee their homes in recent years due to the threat posed by the Islamic State (IS), with many of them going to neighbouring countries such as Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey. The development committee discussed their situation and the humanitarian crisis in Syria on 3 November. The exchange of views followed October's plenary debates on the situation in Kobanê, which is under siege by IS, and the issue of Europeans joining IS. Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevicius met with Marcos Bonturi, the OECD Director for Global Relations, and Nicola Bonucci, the OECD Director for Legal Affairs on 31 October in Vilnius. They discussed the next steps towards a smooth implementation of the OECD's legally binding instruments by Lithuania, and the steps that would lead to a more rapid Lithuania's membership in the organisation. Michael Gahler (EPP, DE), head of the European Parliament delegation observing the parliamentary elections in Tunisia, on Tuesday welcomed the "remarkable success of the Independent High Authority for the Elections, which organised a transparent, professional poll in a very short space of time." Last week the Statue of John Paul II was unveiled near the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. Anne Hidalgo, the mayor of Paris, Cardinal Andre Vingt-Trois, the Archbishop of Paris, and Archbishop Marek Jędraszewski, the metropolitan from Łódź, were among the guests who attended the unveiling ceremony. Parliament passed three resolutions on Thursday, calling on the Russian authorities not to close down the Memorial civil rights NGO; urging the Uzbek authorities to take immediate action to protect human rights; and calling for the immediate arrest of all those responsible for the disappearance of 43 students in Mexico. |
