On the second leg of his visit to the United States, Lithuanian Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevicius had a meeting with Jeffrey Romoff, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Medical Centre of the University of Pittsburgh (UPMC), followed by the signing ceremony of a cooperation agreement between the Baltic Institute of Medical Research, and Strategic Business Initiatives.

Over a thousand former workers at firms producing metals in Communidad Valenciana (Spain) and cars around Genk (Belgium) should get EU aid to help them find new jobs, the Budgets Committee recommended on Tuesday. The proposed European Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGF) aid still needs to be approved by both Parliament as a whole and the Council of Ministers.

Japan is interested in Lithuanian beef products and is waiting for them in the country's stores, said Japanese Ambassador to Lithuania Kazuko Shiraishi during her meeting with Lithuanian Minister of Agriculture Virginija Baltraitiene.
"Since at the moment we are looking for new export markets, cooperation with Japan is very important to us. We hope to finalise all necessary formal procedures to be able to supply high quality products from our producers," the minister said.

Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius and his delegation will visit the United States of America (Washington, D. C., Pittsburgh, Los Angeles, and Chicago) on 5-13 October. The visit is aimed at further strengthening of the strategic partnership between the USA and Lithuania, as well as providing new impetus for the bilateral economic cooperation.

Brussels (3 October) - Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy Štefan Füle met the Turkish Minister of Justice Bekir Bozdağ in Brussels today, shortly after the release of Turkey's new strategy for EU accession.
