The Speaker of the Seimas underlined that the European Union was faced with numerous challenges and that in this context it was very important to be united and show solidarity. The refugee migration is one of the major challenges that can only be tackled through collective effort.

Plans to set up a mandatory EU lobbying register are discussed by MEPs and stakeholders on Monday. The next day Parliament President Martin Schulz is in Aachen to award the 2016 European Charlemagne Youth Prize and on Sunday the Parliament opens its doors to the general public in Strasbourg to celebrate Europe Day. Meanwhile political groups prepare for next week's plenary session in Strasbourg.

In the evening of April 28 Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas received a confirmation via phone call with Federal Minister of Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen that Germany is going to be in the lead of formation of a NATO battalion group for Lithuania.

On 28 April, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius met with the European Commissioner for Trade Cecilia Malmström and stressed that the EU-U.S. trade deal must be in line with our essential interests and significantly improve conditions for transatlantic trade.

President Dalia Grybauskaitė met with Cecilia Malmström, EU Commissioner for Trade, to discuss the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership negotiations between the EU and the United States and the EU’s relations with the Eurasian Economic Union.

On 27 April, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius is paying an official visit to Chișinău, the capital city of Moldova. Meetings with Moldova’s President Nicolae Timofti, Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Andrei Galbur, party leaders and representatives from the opposition focused on Moldova’s aspirations for the implementation of reforms, plans for bilateral cooperation and the country’s internal political situation.

This month, the Embassy of Lithuania in China extended its network of the VFS Lithuania Visa Application Centres to another five cities in China. From now on, Schengen visa applications can be submitted directly at the VFS Lithuania Visa Application Centres in Shanghai, Hangzhou, Chengdu, Jinan and Shenzhen.

MEPs debate the EU-Turkey deal on migration and vote on an agreement to improve European railways during the plenary in Brussels on Wednesday and Thursday. Meanwhile the civil liberties committee discusses March's terrorist attacks in Brussels and an EU-wide list of safe countries of origin where migrants can be returned to. In addition a conference on how to tackle radicalisation in Europe takes place on Tuesday afternoon.

On 21-22 April, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius participated in a meeting of Foreign Ministers of the Nordic, Baltic and Visegrad Group countries in Jūrmala, Latvia. Foreign Ministers of Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, Denmark, Iceland, Norway, Finland, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia and Hungary discussed the region’s security situation, energy security, migration, the EU’s policy towards its eastern neighbours and other issues.

At its closed meeting on 20 April 2016, the Seimas Committee on Foreign Affairs and representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of National Defence discussed the preparation for the NATO Summit of Heads of State and Government to be held in Warsaw on 8–9 July 2016.
