According to R. Malakauskienė, the European Union is getting involved in the area of security and defence with increasing intensity. It is important to maintain the EU engagement at the same level in the future, however, its actions have to be coordinated with NATO and the cooperation between the two organisations increased thus ensuring the response to emerging security challenges is efficient.
Besides the discussion on NATO-EU cooperation, the European Defence Policy Directors also addressed the implementation of the Global Strategy for the European Union's Foreign and Security Policy, security situation in Libya and the Sahel region.
The Global Strategy for the European Union's Foreign and Security Policy, previously presented to the European Council, the decisions taken at the NATO Summit in Warsaw, and the joint declaration of the President of the European Council, President of the European Commission, and the NATO Secretary General provides a basis for the two organisations to cooperate in responding to hybrid threats, providing cyber and maritime security, developing capabilities and assisting their partners.
EU Defence Policy Directors meetings are a high-level format where officials from 28 EU countries discuss the most pressing issues on the EU agenda.
