EducationA recent international research project, financed by the European Commission, showed that Mykolas Romeris University (MRU) is one of the best universities in Central and Eastern Europe creating and implementing social innovations. On Friday 27 January the graduation ceremony for the 94th edition for Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) Bachelors and Masters will take place. On the same day the diplomas will be awarded to the University doctors graduating this semester. Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) was the initiator and organiser of the most BALTECH (Baltic Sea Region University Consortium for Science and Technology) events in 2016. The International PhD Summer School, administrative staff meeting on the topic of Alumni Associations and the meeting of the Baltic technical universities’ student union representatives were among the highlights of the events organised by KTU. The team of Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) researchers are collaborating on the project with Georgian and Israeli institutions, promoting education accessibility among the three most vulnerable social groups: women, ethnic minorities and people with disabilities. Jurgis Kazimieras Staniškis, professor at Kaunas University of Technology (KTU), Institute of Environmental Engineering was appointed to United Nations independent group of scientists to draft the Global Sustainable Development Report. Out of 15-member experts’ team, selected from the 193 UN member states, Staniškis is the only one from Eastern Europe. There currently are at least 316 start-ups operating in Lithuania, a 15,8% increase from the past year, the website Startup Lithuania announces. They paid a total of 7,49M EUR employee taxes (13,8% increase), and their workforce has grown by 13,9% to 1560 employees. Lecturer Abeykoon Mudiyanselage Harsha Sameera from the Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand, visited Faculty of Mechanics at Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (VGTU). Lithuania's Vytautas Magnus University (VDU) and the Lithuanian University of Education Sciences (LEU) expect to merge by the end of 2017. On 19-23 December, professor John Liobe from the University of Rochester (the USA) visited VGTU's Faculty of Electronics and the Laboratory of Micro and Nano-electronics Systems Design and Research.
