WorldLet me start by saying that I am honoured and proud to pay this first visit here. We were together in the headquarters in Rome few months ago. And we are here exactly one year after we saw the tragic loss of lives in this very same sea - it was on the 18 April last year. President Dalia Grybauskaitė met with Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn of Thailand who is on an official visit to Lithuania. The President and the Thai Princess discussed how to consolidate bilateral economic, scientific and cultural ties, as well as collaboration between Lithuania and Thailand in the United Nations and other organizations in order to strengthen international security, improve public health and the protection of the rights of women and children around the world. Parliament condemns the attack in Gulshani-Iqbal Park in Lahore, Pakistan, on 27 March 2016, which killed more than 73 people and injured at least 300; recent murders of human rights defenders in Honduras, in particular Berta Caceres, Nelson Garcia and Paola Barraza; and worsening security and human rights in Nigeria, in separate resolutions voted on Thursday. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania has allocated EUR 50 thousand as humanitarian aid to Ukraine. The funds will be transferred to the World Health Organisation for rendering integrated and health and nutrition services in emergencies to the conflict-affected people in Ukraine and the United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) for children’s mine risk education there. A new cooperation agreement between the European Police Office (Europol) and Brazil to crack down on organised crime and terrorism was backed by Parliament on Tuesday. Europol says that Brazil is increasingly relevant in the fight against organised crime, including illegal immigration and trafficking in human beings. It also has an eye on the 2016 Olympic Games, which, like other major sports events, could create opportunities for increased criminal activity. We, the Foreign Ministers of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States and the High Representative of the European Union, have gathered in Hiroshima, Japan on April 10-11 to address a number of major international issues that impact global peace, security and prosperity. The significant increase of ceasefire violations in the Donetsk region represents an unprecedented level of violence since the sides recommitted to the ceasefire in 2015. We back the call by Special Representative of the Federal Government of Germany for the OSCE Chairmanship, Gernot Erler, and urge all sides to take steps to de-escalate the situation and to fully honour their commitments. A sustainable ceasefire is urgently needed, not least to ensure progress at last in implementing the political obligations from the Minsk agreements. The recent incidents of targeting the OSCE SMM monitors are unacceptable. We call on all sides to refrain from such actions. The 3rd meeting of the Lithuanian-Georgian Commission for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration took place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania on 7 April. The meeting was co-chaired by the Foreign Ministers of the two countries – Linas Linkevičius and Mikheil Janelidze. Civil Liberties MEPs quizzed the Commission on the conditions in the Greek reception facilities, the number and background of staff carrying out asylum interviews, returns and conditions for refugees in Turkey during this morning's debate on the EU-Turkey migration deal. MEPs also stressed the need to respect international law and live up to EU standards. Linkevičius: Georgia’s successful European integration increases regional security2016-04-07, 10:18On 6 April in Vilnius, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia Mikheil Janelidze, who came to Lithuania on an official visit. The Foreign Ministers discussed the security situation in the region, Georgia's European and Euro-Atlantic integration, and bilateral relations. |
