SocietyThe problem of emigration in Lithuania should be resolved by creating jobs and investing in regions, says Lina Antanaviciene, chief advisor to Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite on economic and social policy issues. Migration commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos warned MEPs the refugee crisis was "getting worse" during a meeting organised by the civil liberties committee on 14 January. He said the EU's unity was at stake amid an increase of "populism and nationalism". The commissioner also called on member states to deliver on their own promises and show solidarity to each other: "If Schengen collapses, it will be the beginning of the end of the European project". Lithuania posted a current account surplus of 116.5 mln. euros for November 2015, the central bank said on Wednesday. Yesterday the Sejm has passed the so-called law on bank tax already amended by the Senate. It was signed by the President Andrzej Duda and after being published in the Journal of Law, is supposed to come into force on 1st February 2016. In this connection banks, insurance companies, and loan companies will add at least 5 billion PLN of this tax to the budget during the next 11 months of this year. Russia's gas giant Gazprom this year has offered a new pricing for buyers in Lithuania that has made its natural gas more expensive. Lithuanian customs officers detained 424 kilos of drugs and launched 111 pre-trial investigations into drug smuggling. Lietuvos Oro Uostai (Lithuanian Airports), the operator of three Lithuania's international airports, last year saw its passenger traffic grow by an annual 11.3 %, to 4.2 mln., and the number of flights increase by 5.7 %, to 50,000, and expects the number of passengers to continue growing this year. On 7–17 January 2016, the Seimas are hosting a number of events to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Defence of Freedom of Lithuania. The commemoration will focus on the events of 1991, when the people of Lithuania resisted the Soviet aggressors and defended the independence of the country through their strong determination and dedicated actions. The average price of electricity in Nord Pool Spot's Lithuanian bidding area surged by 50.7 % last week from a week earlier to 54.4 euros per megawatt-hour (MWh) as cold weather boosted power consumption in the country, Litgrid said on Monday. The Latvian airline airBaltic has achieved +16% increase of future bookings for 2016 compared to the same period a year earlier for flights linking the Baltic region with Europe, Scandinavia, CIS and the Middle East. |
