The average price in the entire Nord Pool Spot system rocketed up by 63 % to 27.5 euros per MWh, the power transmission system operator said in a press release.
Power consumption increased by nearly one-fifth in Lithuania and by one tenth in the entire Nord Pool Spot system due to the cold snap and the end of holiday period.
"Imports from the third countries doubled in the reporting period as, during holidays, Russia does not apply an electric power charge, which traditionally lifts the price of electricity nearly twofold," the company said.
Lithuania last week imported 84 % of its electricity, with 41 % of it coming from the Nordic countries, 2 % from Poland and the rest from third countries.
Some 78 % of the cross-border interconnection capacity between Latvia and Estonia, 38 % of that between Lithuania and Latvia, 43 % of that between Lithuania and Belarus, and 79 % of that between Lithuania and Poland was used on Jan. 4 through 10 on average.
