On November 14-15 the Executive Committee of the NATO Energy Centre of Excellence (NATO ENSEC COE) met for the ninth time at its HQ in Vilnius. The meeting addressed NATO ENSEC COE activity in NATO context, the work left to be done in 2016, and plans for 2017. At its sitting, the Seimas adopted a resolution on the strategic Lithuania-US partnership. The document notes that Lithuania commits itself to a responsible NATO membership by strengthening its defence and increasing defence spending to reach at least 2% of GDP as early as by 2018. The Seimas adopted amendments to the Statute of the Seimas with a view to reducing the number of Deputy Speakers of the Seimas, waiving their entitlement to official vehicles, and reviewing the number of parliamentary committees. The new provisions of the Statute were adopted by 106 votes in favour with 2 votes against and 17 abstentions. On the occasion of the 98th anniversary of the proclamation of the Republic of Latvia, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius sent a congratulations letter to the Latvian Minister of Foreign Affairs Edgars Rinkēvičs. The congratulations letter reviews the achievements of Lithuania and Latvia over a 25-year period since the moment when these countries re-established their mutual diplomatic relations. President Dalia Grybauskaite on Thursday is to nominate Saulius Skvernelis, the candidate proposed by the Lithuanian Peasant and Green Union (LPGU), to be the country's next prime minister and ask the parliament to approve him. Viktoras Pranckietis, Speaker of the Seimas, nominated five candidates for Deputy Speakers of the Seimas as follows: Rima Baškienė and Arvydas Nekrošius from the Lithuanian Peasant and Greens Union, Gediminas Kirkilas and Algirdas Butkevičius from the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party, and Irena Degutienė from the Homeland Union – Lithuanian Christian Democrats. In accordance with the Statute, the Seimas elected Viktoras Pranckietis as Speaker of the Seimas. On 10 November 2016, the Seimas met for its final sitting in the current legislative term (2012–2016). The Members of the Seimas who took office on 16 November 2012 are due to complete their mandate on 14 November, after the newly elected Members of the Seimas are sworn in. |
