The president said after meeting with the candidate earlier this week that she expected the new ruling coalition to adopt decisions to increase social security and combat social exclusion.
Following Skvernelis' nomination, his candidature will be considered by the Seimas' political groups and then by the full parliament.
If Skvernelis is supported by the Seimas and appointed as prime minister, he will have up to 15 days to form his Cabinet and have it approved by the president and present the new government and its program to the parliament for approval.
Skvernelis, a former police chief and interior minister, topped the Peasant and Green Union's list for last month's parliamentary elections, in which the party won the most votes.
The LPGU's political group in the Seimas has 59 members. The Social Democrats, the Peasants and Greens' coalition partner, have a 19-strong group in the parliament.
