WorldOn 17 October, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius met with the new Ambassador of Romania to Lithuania Cosmin George Dinescu. The European Commission has today recommended the European Council (Article 50) to endorse the agreement reached at negotiator level on the Withdrawal Agreement, including a revised Protocol on Ireland / Northern Ireland, and approve a revised Political Declaration on the framework of the future EU-UK relationship. The Commission also recommends that the European Parliament give its consent to this agreement. This follows a series of intensive negotiations between the European Commission and UK negotiators over the past few days. President Gitanas Nausėda met with German Defense Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer to discuss bilateral cooperation and key regional security issues. On 9 October in Vilnius, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius met with his Swedish counterpart Ann Linde, who was appointed as the Minister for Foreign Affairs in September. The Foreign Ministers discussed bilateral and regional cooperation, security, topical issues of Eastern neighborhood, and the Lithuanian-Swedish cooperation within international formats. EU approves €30 million disbursement in Macro-Financial Assistance to the Republic of Moldova2019-10-12, 16:30The European Commission, on behalf of the EU, has on 10th October approved the disbursement of €30 million in Macro-Financial Assistance to the Republic of Moldova. The European Commission is mobilising an additional €10 million in humanitarian assistance for the many still dealing with the consequences of the two unprecedented tropical cyclones that hit Mozambique in 2019. In light of the Turkish military operation in north-east Syria, the EU reaffirms that a sustainable solution to the Syrian conflict cannot be achieved militarily. The EU calls upon Turkey to cease the unilateral military action. Renewed armed hostilities in the north-east will further undermine the stability of the whole region, exacerbate civilian suffering and provoke further displacements. Prospects for the UN-led political process to achieve peace in Syria will be more difficult. On October 8 Vice Minister of National Defence Vytautas Umbrasas met with the new Ambassador of Denmark to Lithuania Hans Brask at the Ministry of National Defence. On 4 October in Vilnius, Lithuania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs organized the second international trade policy conference “Shaping the Future of Trade: Outlook on Asia”. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius delivered opening remarks, emphasizing the importance of trade rules and of embracing the potential of new technology in developing business relations with Asia. Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis has met with the Ambassador of the State of Israel Yossef Levy to discuss further prospects for cooperation. |
