President Gitanas Nausėda had a conference call with King Philippe of Belgium to discuss the fight against the pandemic, preparations for the vaccination starting EU-wide on 27 December, defense and security cooperation as well as the security situation in the Baltic region.

On 21 December, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Gabrielius Landsbergis had an online conversation with the United States Ambassador to Lithuania Robert Gilchrist and discussed the situation in the region, important issues of bilateral and multilateral cooperation between Lithuania and the U.S., as well as international security policy issues.

On 17 December, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Gabrielius Landsbergis had a telephone conversation with his Turkish counterpart Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu. The Foreign Ministers welcomed the intensifying ties between the two countries and agreed to further strengthen cooperation, especially in the areas of business, tourism, education and science, as well as the inter-institutional dialogue on economic development.

Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė has spoken with Prime Minister of Latvia Krišjānis Kariņš and agreed to closely coordinate measures taken by the Governments to manage the COVID pandemic and to coordinate efforts in communicating to the public objective information about the incoming vaccine and vaccination process.

On Friday, Parliament adopted measures to ensure basic road and air connections in case no agreement is reached on EU-UK future relations.

On Thursday, the European Parliament adopted two resolutions taking stock of the human rights situation in China and Iran.

President Gitanas Nausėda participated remotely in the commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the signing of the OEDC convention. The leaders of OECD member countries discussed organization’s achievements, state of affairs in the world economy, long-term trends, and the specific contribution of the OECD to shape “better policies for better lives”.

The European Commission has approved, under EU State aid rules, a €30 billion Dutch scheme to support projects to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the Netherlands. The scheme (Stimulering Duurzame Energieproductie, “SDE++”) will contribute to the EU environmental objectives without unduly distorting competition.

The meeting of the United States and Nordic-Baltic countries Political Directors, members of the initiative of the Enhanced Partnership in Northern Europe (e-PINE), joined together on 11th December at the virtual consultations organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Estonia.

President Gitanas Nausėda attends the European Council in Brussels where leaders discuss key issues in the European Union. The first day’s meeting intended to discuss the management measures of the COVID-19 pandemic, vaccination strategy, the fight against climate change and relations with third countries lasted until morning.
