To support the efforts of the United Nations in the field of human rights, Lithuania has allocated 30 thousand euros to the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).

On 7 April, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Gabrielius Landsbergis met with the Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation of Spain Arancha González Laya, who is visiting Vilnius. The Foreign Ministers discussed bilateral relations, security situation in the region, and the most important items on the EU and international agendas.

Ten years ago, millions of Syrians took to the streets of Dara’a, Aleppo and Damascus, calling for democracy and respect of their fundamental rights and basic freedoms. The brutal response by the regime triggered over the span of a decade one of the most serious criminal enterprises and humanitarian crises since the Second World War resulting in more than 400 000 deaths and in countless violations of human rights.

On April 1, Lithuania, together with the co-chairs of the United Nations Group of Friends for the Protection of Journalists, France and Greece, released the Joint Statement on the deteriorating situation of journalists in Myanmar. The record number of nearly 80 United Nations Member States and the European Union supported the Joint Statement.

On 1 April in New York, the Permanent Representative of Lithuania to the United Nations, Ambassador Audra Plepytė and the Permanent Representative of the Kingdom Eswatini (Swaziland) to the United Nations, Ambassador Melusi Martin Masuku signed a joint communiqué on the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

In their call yesterday, Commissioner for Justice Didier Reynders and Chairperson of the Personal Information Protection Commission Yoon Jong In welcomed the successful conclusion of the adequacy talks between the European Union and the Republic of Korea.

Albania, Kosovo, North Macedonia and Serbia need to continue focusing on fundamental reforms, say MEPs in resolutions adopted on Thursday.

The EU is supporting Romania in delivering 50,400 doses of vaccines to Moldova in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. This delivery follows Moldova's request for vaccines through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. The Commission coordinates and finances up to 75 % of the costs for transporting the assistance. The EU will also mobilise medical items via its RescEU medical reserve to North Macedonia and Montenegro to help them cope with the pandemic.
