The President noted that, as Lithuania found ways to counter the hybrid attack by the Belarus regime, it was trying to channel this artificially created flow of irregular migrants to other countries of NATO’s eastern flank.
President Nausėda and Secretary General Stoltenberg also discussed the security situation in the region in the context of the Russian-Belarus military exercise Zapad 2021. It was emphasized that the Alliance had to remain particularly vigilant and be prepared for possible incidents.
The President of Lithuania informed the NATO Secretary General that Lithuania was considering formally contacting the Alliance to request the deployment of the Counter Hybrid Support Team to Lithuania.
The NATO Secretary General assured the President of Lithuania that the Alliance was closely monitoring the situation on NATO’s eastern border and was prepared to design response scenarios accordingly and allocate all necessary measures to ensure security in the region.
