The European Union will announce €60 million in additional support for Somali refugees at a Ministerial Pledging Conference in Brussels

Representatives of the Quartet – Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, United States Secretary of State John Kerry, European Union High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy Federica Mogherini, and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon (represented by UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Nickolay Mladenov) - met in Vienna on October 23.

The Quartet expresses grave concern over the continuing escalation of tensions between Israelis and Palestinians. The Quartet condemns all acts of terror and violence against civilians.

Underscoring the urgent need to restore calm the Quartet reiterates its call for maximum restraint and avoidance of provocative rhetoric and actions.

To help mark the 70th anniversary of the United Nations, Gediminas' Tower, one of the best known symbols of the capital city, will be lit up blue - the official colour of the United Nations - on UN Day, 24 October.

Lithuanian Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevicius, who is on a working visit in France, on Wednesday met with French Prime Minister Manuel Valls and thanked him for France's contribution to the NATO Air Policing Mission in the Baltics. Butkevicius invited the head of the French Government to pay a visit to Lithuania.

On October 20th afternoon, it was announced that on Monday, at 8:30 p.m. local time, a Bahamas-registered ship flying the flag of the Comoro Islands was attacked in Port Harcourt's port in Nigeria. Four members of the crew, two Lithuanian and two Ukrainian nationals, were abducted.

After a decade of negotiations, a historic deal was reached in July 2015 on Iran's nuclear programme. The agreement will significantly affect the country and its role in the world. On Monday the Parliament's foreign affairs committee discussed with experts the EU's strategy towards Iran. Although specialists pointed out the agreement could create opportunities for the EU, MEPs raised concerns about the country's human rights record.

Romanian President Klaus Iohannis met EP President Martin Schulz on 15 October to discuss the refugee crisis, EU reforms that might be needed in the near future and the freedom of movement within the Union. This was the Romanian president's first visit to the European Parliament, after taking up office last December. The meeting was followed by a short press conference.
