Innovative technologies of Industry 4.0 are in every part of nowadays business processes. Automated guided vehicles, robots, smart tools, augmented and virtual reality – only a shortlist of tools used in small, medium, and large enterprises around the world. However, the researchers of Kaunas University of Technology, Lithuania mark that employees remain the key factor in every part of the business chain and raise a question – how can contemporary technologies be used to investigate their performance?

With the election of ten new members, this year’s Young Academy of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences was fully formed. The Young Academy was established four years ago, it is composed of elected motivated scientists working at Lithuanian science and higher education institutions, who have significant scientific achievements and actively engage in professional and social activities. Out of the ten new members of the Young Academy, three are researchers from Vilnius University (VU).

Young researchers from KTU triumphed in the Ideas to Innovation (i2i) Baltic experiential programme for Baltic innovators. The virtual Ideas to Innovation (i2i) programme event designed by the University of Cambridge and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) took place on November 24-26. Vilnius University (VU) improved its results and confidently maintains the leading position among the universities in the higher education institutions ranking by subject published today. VU leads in more than a third of bachelor’s and full-time (35) and almost half (38) of master’s degree fields. Compared to the last year, VU has improved its positions in 5 bachelor’s and 7 master’s study fields.

The world’s largest manufacturers lose 1 trillion dollars per year to machine failure. Many problems lie in the noisy factory environment – working equipment and processes produce high sound, consequently, machinery faults are often unheard or for that reason detected too late. Researchers from the Kaunas University of Technology (KTU), Lithuania have proposed an artificial intelligence-based method for different mechanical failures detection in a noisy environment. The new solution is not only sustainable – equipment can be easily digitalised, without remodelling it – but also relatively low cost.
