Making a living as a farmer is becoming increasingly difficult in Europe. As large retail chains are able to dictate the terms, farmers are often forced to sell their products for less than they cost to produce. On 7 June MEPs adopted a resolution, calling for an end to these unfair trading practices. They now want the European Commission to come up with proposals to improve farmers' bargaining position. At the end of the coming year, in the campus of Klaipėda University(KU), near the business incubator, a new contemporary building of scientific laboratories will arise. The opening of the construction on June 17 was attended by Republic of Lithuania Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius, Vice- Minister of Education and Science Svetlana Kauzonienė, Chancellor of the Government Alminas Mačiulis and Vice-Chancellor Rimantas Vaitkus, Mayor of Klaipėda Vytautas Grubliauskas, Rector of KU Eimutis Juzeliūnas, Deputy Managing Director of the Irdaiva Company that performs the construction Vytas Lopinys, and KU social partners and community members. The beginning of the construction was symbolically commemorated by the ceremony of burying a capsule with a letter to future generations. The Prime Minister wished for the place to become a beacon of maritime sciences, and for Lithuania, to become a maritime state not only in geographic, but also in economic terms.

After the airport is connected to the free economic zone and with a constant staff supply of qualified aviation engineers prepared at local university, Kaunas will be capable of accepting for service the great transatlantic aircrafts with repair value from several hundred thousand to several million euros.

Yesterday international university rankings „QS World University Rankings“ published the list of 200 top universities in „Emerging Europe and Central Asia 2016“. There are 7 universities from Lithuania on the top list (last year there were 5) – Vilnius University, Vilnius Gediminas Technical University, Kaunas University of Technology, Vytautas Magnus University, Klaipėda University, Šiauliai University and Mykolas Romeris University.

There are two more enterprises created by KTU graduates among the listed most ambitious Lithuanian start-ups. “We are proud to be reading about Lithuanian start-ups in global media. This means that we are equal players in the game”, says Donatas Smailys, Head of KTU’s start-up incubator Startup Space.
