At the meeting of the UN Ad Hoc Open-ended Informal Working Group to study issues relating to the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity beyond areas of national jurisdiction in New York from 19 to 23 August 2013, the EU delegation, headed by the Lithuanian EU Presidency's team, represented an ambitious EU and its Member States' position on a new implementing agreement under the Law of the Sea Convention (UNCLOS) to protect and conserve marine biodiversity in the high seas and sustainable use of marine biological diversity beyond areas of national jurisdiction.

Lithuania urges the Syrian Government to allow a group of United Nations experts to immediately and impartially examine the alleged use of chemical weapons in Syria.

On 21 August at an extraordinary meeting of the European Union Foreign Affairs Council Linas Linkevičius, Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs, together with his colleagues from other EU Member States discussed situation in Egypt and the position and steps to be taken by the EU in response to the on-going crisis in the country.

Water at nearly all of Europe's beaches – and most of its rivers and lakes – are clean enough to swim in. And the quality is improving.

President Dalia Grybauskaitė extended congratulations to Her Majesty Elizabeth II on the birth of the first child of Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge.
