To improve the global protection of endangered species, Parliament demands stepping up the fight against illegal trafficking of wild fauna and flora.

Vilnius Airport announces that it has achieved significant recognition from the international environmental programme Airports Carbon Accreditation (ACA). Lithuania's largest airport has managed to reduce its average carbon dioxide emissions per passenger by more than a third in just a few years. This and the results of various other environmental projects have enabled the airport to reach the third stage of the international programme (“optimisation”), the best rating among Baltic States' airports.

On September 30 the Ministry of National Defence signed a contract to acquire kamikaze drones for Ukraine: the MoD will mediate to procure Warmate loitering ammunition systems from Poland’s WB Group with the money crowdfunded by the people of Lithuania. On September 19-25 fighter aircraft conducting the NATO Air Policing Mission in the Baltic states were scrambled 3 times to intercept military aircraft of the Russian Federation in the international airspace over the Baltic Sea flying in violation of international aviation flight rules.

The new leadership of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) was elected at the plenary session of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in Bucharest (Romania) this Thursday – Tomas Lamanauskas became the Deputy Secretary-General for the 2023-2026 term. This is the first time in the country’s history that a representative of Lithuania has been elected to such a high position in the United Nations Organisation. The American representative, Doreen Bogdan-Martin, was elected the new Secretary-General of the ITU.

Deputy Minister of Transport and Communications Julius Skačkauskas is visiting Canada this week, where he will participate in the session of the Assembly of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) of the United Nations, which will define new aviation standards and raise relevant issues regarding flight safety; he is also scheduled to meet with the heads of the Transport Canada and discuss the diversification of logistics supply chains and the possibilities of closer cooperation between the countries.

To mark World Car-Free Day, an innovation is being presented in the country’s major cities: real-time public transport information is now available to passengers in Vilnius, Kaunas and Klaipėda when planning a trip through the Google Maps app. According to Minister of Transport and Communications Marius Skuodis, who presented and has tested the innovation himself, this successful example is not a goal, but an intermediate step toward the creation of a unified Lithuanian public transport system.

During his visit to New York, President Gitanas Nausėda met with Lithuanian artists living and working in the United States and visited the exhibition of their artworks at the Permanent Mission of Lithuania to the United Nations.

Lithuania is actively seeking to attract more cargoes from Kazakhstan, offering this country logistics services and transit options by rail and through the seaport of Klaipėda. On 19-21 September, in the largest city of Kazakhstan, Almaty, the Lithuanian delegation led by the Vice-Minister of Transport and Communications Julius Skačkauskas presented the potential of our country’s transport system to the heads of the Ministry of Industry and Infrastructure Development of Kazakhstan, authorities of the city of Almaty and business representatives. The issues of carriage of goods by road were discussed at the meeting of the Lithuanian-Kazakhstan Integrated Commission.
