SocietyOn 8 January in Vilnius, Lithuania's Minister of Foreign Affairs Linas Linkevičius will meet with the U.K. Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond. On 1 January 2015, Lithuania adopted the euro as its official currency and the changeover is running smoothly and according to plan. The previous national currency – the litas – will be phased out during a transitional two-week dual circulation period when both currencies have legal tender status in Lithuania. On Monday, January 5th, Canadian-based coffee franchise and retailer Second Cup launched a cafe in Lithuania's capital Vilnius, in business centre 3 Bures. EUR 200,000 was invested in the cafe and more are planned to be opened in the future. Babies born on 1 January 2015, the historic day when Lithuania adopts the single European currency, will receive the first Lithuanian euro coins from the Bank of Lithuania. Lithuania hopes to benefit from the investment plan recently proposed by President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker. Vilnius has already sent Brussels a list of projects to be funded and received praise for it. With 70 votes in favour and 2 abstentions, the Seimas has adopted amendments to the Law on Tobacco Control which transposes all the provisions of Directive 2014/40/EU in so far as they regulate electronic cigarettes. |
