The low point for the economy was the first quarter, when Poland's gross domestic product grew by only 0.5 per cent; that quickened to 0.8 per cent in the second quarter. The spectre of recession threatening Europe's only economy to enjoy more than two decades without a contraction seems to have receded.

In August 2013, external assets of the Bank of Lithuania decreased by LTL 322.8 million (EUR 93.4 million), while external liabilities increased by LTL 157.0 million (EUR 45.4 million). At the end of the month these indicators were equal to LTL 20.3 billion (EUR 5.8 billion) and LTL 192.5 million (EUR 55.7 million) correspondingly, informs LETA/ELTA.

The European Commission will today present plans to reform the region's telecoms industry which they believe will underpin a single market for companies and consumers, which it describes as the most ambitious plan for the sector since the dismantling of the public monopolies 26 years ago.
