The Lithuanian Government approved the amendments to the Law on Tobacco Control registered by the Seimas Committee on Health. The amendments are aimed to curb consumption of electronic cigarettes by minors. Lithuanian vegetable growers call the government to intensify search for new markets2014-12-11, 10:20Director of Lithuanian Vegetable Producers' Association Zofija Cironkiene says the government should show greater initiative searching for new markets for Lithuanian fruit and vegetable growers. The Lithuanian Parliament has proposed to tax immovable property worth more that LTL 760,000 (EUR 220,000) by a 0.5 percent rate. This would affect approximately 4,700 Lithuanians. Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevicius says that the tax is aimed only at the rich. The European Commission signed a new partnership agreement (6 December 2014), involving airlines, airport operators and Air Navigation Service Providers (ANSP). They will receive up to €3 bn in EU funding, in order to implement common projects and modernise Europe's Air Traffic Management (ATM) System. On 5 December 2014, a Christmas train starts running in the central streets of Vilnius Old Town. During a second consideration of the improved draft budget for 2015 of the State Social Insurance Fund Board under the Ministry of Social Security and Labor (Sodra), the Seimas approved the document. The Seimas will hold an extraordinary voting on its adoption on 4 December. Statistics Lithuania informs that an annual publication Elderly People in Lithuania has been released. Lithuania is experiencing population ageing: the number of elderly (aged 65 and older) people and the proportion thereof in the total population annually increases, while the total population decreases. At the beginning of 2014, Lithuania had 2943.5 thousand residents, out of whom 542.7 thousand, or 18.4%, were aged 65 and older. Soon the municipal elections will take place and mayors will be elected by direct vote for the first time. Thus, the mayor of the city could be selected by a majority of votes already in the first round. This fact scares many politicians, especially the leader of the Conservatives Andrius Kubilius.
