SocietyIn 2014, the number of recipients of old-age pensions paid by the State Social Insurance Fund (Sodra) decreased by a thousand to 599,600. By the end of 2014, as much as 923,200 people received at least one type of pension, i.e. one in three Lithuanians. In IMD World Competitiveness Ranking 2015, Lithuania moved to 28 position from 34, which is the highest position so far. Lithuania out-performed its neighbouring countries: Estonia stepped by one position to 31, Latvia declined by 8 positions to 43, Poland moved up but still is in position 33. Lithuanian domestic insurance market reaches its highest performance of premiums written over Q12015-05-25, 10:37In the first quarter of the year 2015, Lithuania's' insurance market grew by 6.9% in terms of premiums written year on year, and amounted to EUR 150.7 million. This is the highest performance of premiums written over the first quarter in the history of the domestic insurance market. Struggling companies will be given a second chance to improve their financial situation under new rules on insolvency approved by MEPs on 20 May. Every year 1.7 million jobs are lost in the EU due to companies going bankrupt. Under the new legislation on cross-border insolvencies, companies in financial difficulties but otherwise sound are given another opportunity to turn the situation around. The plans also include measures to help firms before they go bust. The Seimas of Lithuania has adopted amendments to the Law on Tourism to reinforce consumer (tourist) protection and monitoring of tourism service providers. The Latvian airline airBaltic will replace Air Lituanica flights and rescue the stranded passengers, affected by today's suspension of operations of the Lithuanian carrier. |
