80% of 500 of volunteers were deemed fit for military service. Volunteers were allowed to choose the unit where they would serve. The Lithuanian Grand Duke Butigeidis Dragoon Battalion located in Klaipeda stood out in popularity.
According to the defence minister, it is very likely that only volunteers will develop their skills in this unit and they would be joined by only a small number of conscripts.
Olekas said, however, that the final decision would be announced in early September, when the first wave of soldiers would be sent to serve in the battalion. The minister added that a sufficient number of volunteers or conscripts have chosen to serve in the battalion.
As reported, 3,000 conscripts will be drafted for mandatory initial military service this year. The first conscripts will arrive to Lithuanian Grand Duke Butigeidis Dragoon Battalion on 24 August.
