SportLithuanian basketball team had its second victory in Group D at the European Championships in Riga. According to the FIBA President, during his visit he wanted to personally study the mystery of why Lithuania, a country with a population of a mere 3 million, had achieved so much in basketball and how this experience could be replicated in other federations. Lithuanian swimmer Rūta Meilutytė (18) took fourth place at the world swimming championship in Kazan at the distance of 50 meters of breaststroke. A modern Museum of Basketball will be opened in Kaunas. Kaunas councilors have issued an agreement to start the construction of the building. Ukrainian Wladimir Klitschko will be defending the WBA, WBO and IBF Heavyweight World Champion title in professional boxing for the 19th time. He will face the British Tyson Fury on October 24th in Dusseldorf. Brazilians Alison Cerutti and Bruno Oscar Schmidt become world champions in beach volleyball. They defeated the Dutch duo Reinder Nummerdora and Christiaan Varenhorst 2:1 (12:21, 21:14, 22:20) in the tournament finals held in the Netherlands. Ričardas Berankis was not able to cross the second round barrier of the Grand Slam tournament at Wimbledon, however he gained recognition from the audience and tennis fans from all over the world for displaying unbreakable will and fantastic performance. The Lithuanian lost the duel to Croatian Marin Cilic. President Dalia Grybauskaite presented letters of appreciation to Lithuanian athletes, as well as their coaches and doctors, who won medals in the 2015 European Games that were held in Azerbaijan's capital Baku. Seven Lithuanian athletes stepped on the podium in the first ever European Games. Old Trakai can be called the capital of table tennis in Trakai district without a doubt. There is a very active table tennis club in the local Polish Andžej Stelmachovski elementary school. The school does not only host international table tennis competitions, but also allows students to practice their tennis skills even during the summer holidays. Lithuanian rower Henrikas Žustautas won the first golden medal at the European Games in Baku. |
