In the third round of group D, the Lithuanian team faced off Belgians. On Monday afternoon, the Lithuanians lost to Belgium 74:76 (20:12, 15:23, 19:22, 20:19).
Lithuania could have held the ball until the very end of the match, which would go to overtime as the score was 74-74, but when Lithuanian M. Kalnietis missed a vital three-pointer with about five seconds to go, Belgium used their opportunity to grab a rebound and took off in transition towards the Lithuanian basket. The initial layup attempt was a miss; however Belgium's M. Lojeski managed to get around Lithuanian defence and went for the tip-in before the buzzer sounded. The referees went on to review the game-winning shot, as it was unclear if it was made before or after the buzzer. After nearly three minutes of tension, the referees agreed to count the basket, thus resulting in Belgium's victory.
This is Lithuania's first defeat during this year's championship.
Lithuanians have already enjoyed two victories, whereas Belgians had one victory and one defeat.
On Saturday, Lithuania beat Ukraine 69:68, and on Sunday Lithuanian basketball team defeated the Latvian team 68:49, and thus became the leader in their group.
Belgians lost to Latvians (67:78), but were victorious over the Estonians (84:55).
Lithuanians will play with Estonians on Wednesday.
