European Space expo opens in Vilnius2013-09-18, 20:01The European Space Expo has officially opened in Vilnius Cathedral square. The exhibition goes on display from 17 to 22 September. The visitors of the exhibition will have a chance to find out how space-based technologies are adapted in our everyday life. The exhibition presents European Space Policy, ambitious plans and achievements in the field of space. The exhibition also displays the Lithuanian achievements in space technology. 'Space-based technologies are adapted in our everyday life. Due to space technology we can use mobile phones, bank cards, navigation systems, satellite TV. These are just a few examples of how space technology has improved the lives of people', - said Marius Skarupskas, Vice-Minister of Economy. According to Vice-Minister Skarupskas, Lithuania also has a huge capacity for innovation, which can be used to create space-based technologies. Lithuania may not only use but also develop high value added services and space technology. 13 interactive exhibition stands illustrate how space-based technologies are applied in various fields: agriculture, aviation, road construction, mapping, energy, fisheries, and climate change management. Every evening will be held themed events. The European Space expo highlights the critical role of the European Union in space and space-based technologies. According to Simon Holland, representative of the European Commission's Enterprise and Industry Directorate-General, an independent European global navigation satellite system Galileo will not only be more accurate and reliable than any currently existing navigation systems in the world, but will also provide a distinct advantage for European entrepreneurs to create the next generation of services. The exhibition also presents Copernicus programme (European Earth observation programme - the global monitoring for environment and security) and EGNOS (European geostationary navigation overlay service). These programmes are expected to help open new market opportunities, contribute to economic growth and job creation. The exhibition presents the first Lithuanian small satellites 'LitSat-1' and 'LituanicaSat-1', which are scheduled to run into space this year. European Space Expo is one of the EU Council Presidency events organized by the Ministry of Economy of the Republic of Lithuania and the Agency for Science, Innovation and Technology. The exhibition is visual and interactive, all the presentations are given in the Lithuanian language and the admission is free of charge.
