Lithuania sees a sharp rise in the number of patented inventions

An amount of requests is foreseen to reach 140 by the end of this year, up to 18% rise from 2012 with 109 requests, and roughly up by 50% in comparison to 2011.

It is due to cooperation of business and academic institutions that work together and search for new inventions. Big business provides academic institutions with special financial aid that contributes to the synergy of those two sectors. What si more single European patent gives the inventors great opportunity to patent their inventions by low cost.

The volume of patented inventions has been substantially growing both at the national and European levels. In the last five years the number of applications submitted to the European Patent Office by the Lithuanians has risen by over 51%; in 2012, a total of 41 applications were submitted. Application rates of Latvia and Estonia are slightly higher; according to 2012 statistical data Latvia submitted 57, while Estonia – 52 applications, yet, Lithuania shows the biggest growth. Compared to 2008, the number of inventions presented by Latvia has grown by 5% and 48% by Estonia.
