On 25 October in Kaunas, the Lithuanian Presidency of the EU Council together with the European Commission is presenting new possibilities that Erasmus+, the EU's new programme for education, training, sport and youth, will open for students and academic staff from Eastern Partnership countries. Starting 2014, Erasmus+ will allow Eastern Partnership and EU countries to actively participate in bilateral academic exchange. The motto of the event is Bringing Eastern European partners closer to the EU. On behalf of the Lithuanian Presidency the event was opened by Minister of Education and Science Dainius Pavalkis.

Erasmus+, the EU's new programme for education, training, sport and youth, will provide more opportunities for students and staff in Eastern Partnership countries to study or train in the European Union – and vice versa. Kaunas University of Technology in Lithuania will host an information event on 24-25 October, which will enable the European Commission to present in detail how the international dimension of the higher education part of the new programme will work. Teaching staff and managers from the main higher education institutions in the region will also receive a briefing on the Marie Skłodowska Curie Actions, which funds research fellowships.

European research and innovation event "ICT 2013: Create, Connect, Grow" held together with the European Commission will take place in Vilnius on November 6–8. In this event, the best European scientists of information and communication technologies (ICT), representatives from experienced and new companies, and strategists from the digital sector will discuss questions related to European ICT policy.

On 9–20 October, a competition of European pianists organized every two years is taking place in Caen, Lower Normandy. The competition's patron is the President of the European Parliament and the winner will be awarded with the presiding country Prime Minister's prize.

On 17-18 October national meeting of announcers of the European Union's mutual information system on social protection (MISSOC) will host in Vilnius. „We welcome the fact that the best practices on information of the system of social protection operation will be shared in Lithuania. The possibility of its improvement will be discussed, whereas throughout the European Union MISSOC is a very popular information system for the EU and is used as the main electronic database that provides a lot of useful, structured legal information about social protection in the European Union Member States, the countries of the European economic area and in Switzerland", - says Algimanta Pabedinskienė, the Minister of Social Security and Labour.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs Linas Linkevičius sent a letter to Litvak Michael Levitt, congratulating him on winning the 2013 Nobel Prize in chemistry. The Minister invited M.Levitt, whose family came from Plungė, to Lithuania.

On 4-6 December 2013 the Ministry of Economy of the Republic of Lithuania along with the Agency for Science, Innovation and Technology will hold the first Vilnius Innovation Forum 'Innovation Drift' in Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania. Sir Timothy John Berners−Lee, the inventor of the World Wide Web, who is coming to the Baltic States for the first time, is invited as one of the keynote speakers of the Forum. Moreover, insights on the role of innovation in Europe's economy will be also shared by business and science innovation leaders from all over Europe.

Professors Peter Higgs and François Englert have won this year's Nobel Prize for Physics thanks to their ground-breaking work on the Higgs boson. The particle - which has been nicknamed the God particle because it proved very difficult to detect - helps to explain how the universe got its mass. Lithuania-based company Neurotechnology has released freeware application NPointer 2.0 for gestural and voice-based computer control and navigation, the company said in a statement.
