In December 2014, the external assets of the Bank of Lithuania increased by EUR 722.6 million (LTL 2.5 billion), while external liabilities decreased by EUR 17.6 million (LTL 60.7 million). At the end of the month, these indicators amounted to EUR 7.9 billion and EUR 76.4 million respectively (LTL 27.3 billion and LTL 263.8 million respectively), the Bank of Lithuania said. The dual circulation period of litas and euro in Lithuania ended on 15 January. The euro has today become the sole legal tender in Lithuania, after two weeks in which payments could also be made in litas, with change being given in euros. Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite attended a festive event to mark the introduction of the euro. She welcomed the participants of the event and thanked all those who had contributed to euro adoption in Lithuania. Eleven credit unions participating in the currency exchange programme exchanged LTL 4.3 million to EUR 1.25 million and serviced a total of 3,000 people from 1 to 7 January, 2015. Vitas Vasiliauskas, governor of the Bank of Lithuania, has announced that on Friday, January 9th, Lithuania's cash circulation in the euro was for the first time higher than that in the litas. |
