Capping a long and trying day in parliament, the sole remaining candidate for president – Latvian Defense Minister Raimonds Vejonis (Greens/Farmers), in the fifth vote this evening, emerged victorious, with 55 votes putting him over the top. He will assume the office of President, succeeding Andris Berzins. 44 MPs voted against Vejonis in the final vote, while one voting ticket was deemed invalid and one MP did not participate in the vote.4 Current President Andris Berzins' third term in office ends on July 7. Vejonis will become the fifth Latvian president since the restoration of independence and ninth ever in Latvia's history.
