The news was confirmed to Lithuania's National Defence Minister Juozas Olekas by Rose Eilene Gottemoeller, the Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security for the US State Department.
It was decided to set up NFIUs in the Baltic States and Central and South-Eastern Europe during the NATO 2014 Summit in Wales.
"We expect a long-term and solid deployment of US military forces, equipment and weaponry in Lithuania," the minister said.
