Members of the European Parliament are currently collecting votes needed for the proposal. If the idea is supported by more than a half of MEPs, then the European Commission will have to respond to the initiative.
According to statistics, in Europe every third female over 15 years old suffers gender-based violence. Meanwhile, 7 women die in Europe everyday due to violence.
It is estimated that violence is a detriment to the whole society, thus the European Commission is encouraged to put forward a directive on combating violence against women. Its provisions should be transposed into national law by all EU Member States.
