Deputy Minister of Agriculture Vilius Martusevicius met with Ambassador of Japan Kazuko Shiraishi and discussed about the introduction of Lithuanian goods to the Japanese market.
The deputy minister told the ambassador that Lithuania is ready to develop active bilateral cooperation, including cooperation on information technology in agriculture, thus promoting investment in this area in both countries. In addition, Lithuania is ready for the exchange of experts and scientists, exchange in good practice, organisation of business missions and participation in agricultural exhibitions.
It is planned that Japanese inspectors will pay a visit to Lithuania to assess the quality of Lithuanian beef in May. Quality testing is the last stage before receiving permits to export produce.
In 2013, export of Lithuanian agricultural and food products to Japan accounted for EUR 11 million. Based on the export volume, Japan was placed 31st of 134 countries that Lithuania exported to. However, in the first ten months of 2014 food product export increased by 33% compared with the same period of 2013. Export of skimmed milk powder grew by 3.7 times, while export of snails grew by 57%.
