"The EU must be ambitious in its goals and decisive in its actions, as the circumstances of our time do not allow us to be otherwise. Poland is taking over the Presidency of the EU Council at a crucial time for Europe necessitating decisions to strengthen our security and defence industry, enhance EU's global competitiveness, resilience and economic security, and to support Ukraine by all means possible. I am hopeful that Ukraine and Moldova, our like-minded partners pursuing their European aspirations, will move closer to EU membership during the next six months of the Polish Presidency," said Head of Government Mr Paluckas.
The Prime Minister underlined Poland's clear understanding of Europe's security and defence challenges, the importance of putting pressure on Russia through sanctions, and the critical period for Ukraine.
The focus on security and defence must remain among top priorities for the EU, and in line with this approach, Lithuania plans to increase defence funding to 5-6% of GDP annually for the period 2026-2030, following the latest decision of the National Defence Council.
On EU's support to Ukraine, the Lithuanian Prime Minister noted that Ukraine must not be pressured into unfair, externally imposed negotiations that fail to ensure the lasting peace, and that the EU's full support to the Ukrainians, including military support, must not falter under any circumstances.
The meeting also highlighted other key issues on the EU agenda. Mr Paluckas outlined the priorities and approach of the 19th Government, emphasising the importance of tackling illegal migration and strengthening the protection of borders, the preparation of the negotiations on the EU's multiannual budget, the EU's enlargement prospects, and the protection of the critical infrastructure in the Baltic Sea.
The Prime Minister also stressed the need for the strongest possible transatlantic link, given that the EU and the US have many common interests that can best be realised by working together.
