The Presidents of the Baltic States and Poland expressed their profound disappointment at the recent decision by the ruling Georgian Dream leadership to suspend negotiations on EU membership. Noting that EU integration is Georgia’s constitutional commitment, the leaders of the four countries described the decision as a serious setback to the aspirations of the Georgian people.
The Presidents urged an independent international investigation into the numerous reported violations in the parliamentary elections held in Georgia on 26 October 2024, and reiterated the European Parliament’s call for a re-run of the Georgian parliamentary elections.
“We condemn in the strongest terms the use of force against the Georgian people, as well as the arbitrary detention of individuals exercising their rights. We call on the Georgian authorities to immediately cease these violent actions and to uphold the fundamental freedoms of assembly and expression in accordance with Georgia’s international commitments,” the joint declaration reads.
The leaders of the four countries called for an immediate investigation into all acts of violence and for those responsible to be held accountable. The Presidents of Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia and Poland reaffirmed their strong support for the aspirations of the Georgian people towards European integration.
