Chairman of the Committee Thorbjoern Jagland said that they were honoured for 'the fight against the oppression of children and young people and for efforts to ensure the right of education for all children'.
Kailash Satyarthi showed great courage and determination by following the traditions of Gandhi. He organized and led various peaceful protests and demonstrations. Most of his attention was devoted to the fight against child abuse, the purpose of which was to get financial gain. He also contributed greatly to formulation and implementation of the major international conventions on children's rights.
Although Malala Yousafzai is still very young, she has been fighting for the rights of girls to get an education already for several years. She proved and set an example that children and young people can also contribute to improving their own standards of living. Malala Yousafzai did not give up in the most dangerous circumstances and did everything she could to reach the objectives of better living conditions in her country. The battle for the brighter future turned this teenage girl into one of the most important fighters for the girls´ education rights around the world. Now M.Yousafzai is 17 years old. Two years ago the gunman of the Taliban shot M.Yousafzai to the head because of her efforts to ensure Pakistani girls the right to education.
In addition to gold medals that will be awarded to the winners during a ceremony in Oslo on 10th December, the two winners will also share 8 million Swedish kronor (3.04 million. Dollars) cash prize.
Last year, the Nobel Peace Prize went to the international Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) for its efforts to stop the use of chemical weapons which have brought fear to the world since World War II.
