If the draft resolution of the Government is supported by the Government and the concerned ministries, Lithuanian embassy in South Africa will open its doors on 5th November.
Embassies of Lithuania in Bulgaria, Portugal and Slovenia were closed in July 2014.
Lithuanian Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius believes that they should be replaced by new posts in South Africa, Brazil and Australia. Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius is of the same opinion.
It will be the second embassy of Lithuania in Africa. Currently, the only Lithuanian embassy in Africa is functioning in the capital of Egypt - Cairo. Now it is the embassy in Israel which is appointed for the cooperation with South Africa.
It is planned that the newly appointed Lithuania's diplomatic mission in South Africa will be also accredited in Angola, Botswana, Mozambique and Namibia.
