Regarding the security situation in the Middle East, the President stressed the need to avoid a humanitarian catastrophe in the Gaza Strip. Gitanas Nausėda said that Lithuania respects Israel’s right to defend its state and citizens against the terrorist group Hamas but emphasized that such actions must adhere to humanitarian law and avoid causing civilian casualties.
“The global security situation remains tense. The task of the international community is to achieve lasting peace both in the Middle East and in Europe. It is important to work together without forgetting the fundamental principles of humanity. Lithuania stands for a sustainable two-state solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Our attention cannot be diverted from Russia’s aggression against Ukraine,” the President said.
Gitanas Nausėda emphasized that the international community cannot allow Russia’s imperialist and colonial ambitions to expand and must curb them. The President thanked the Egyptian leader for his support for the Ukrainian Peace Formula and called for continued support to Ukraine. He underscored the need to increase public resilience to disinformation and propaganda spread by Russia and used very actively in the Global South countries to spread fakes on food security. Gitanas Nausėda stressed that it is necessary to pressure Russia not to block the Black Sea Grain Initiative, as this poses a direct threat to increasing the global food crisis. Lithuania is ready to ship Ukrainian grain via Klaipėda to contribute to tackling the issue of food security at a global level.
The two leaders also discussed bilateral cooperation. The President pointed out that positive dynamics have been observed in recent years in relations between Lithuania and Egypt and that there is a potential for expanding cooperation, especially in information technologies and energy.
The Presidents of Lithuania and Egypt also discussed migration issues. Gitanas Nausėda underlined that Lithuania appreciates constructive cooperation with Egypt on illegal migration and the readmission of migrants.
